The EN 1149-5 standard for protection against explosion hazards
The standard is frequently applied in the following sectors:
- Chemicals
- Chemical processing
- Transportation
- Oil and Gas extraction
- Utilities
The general requirements of anti-static protective clothing are set out in EN 340.
This standard has a lightning bolt symbol, with the EN 1149-5 standard below. This standard specifies the requirements of electrically conductive work clothing. This safety clothing is part of a total earthed system (combined with conductive footwear etc.). Anti-static clothing prevents the formation of sparks, so also prevents explosions.
Safety clothing with this standard is only accepted if it is combined with the standard (EN 531 or EN ISO 11612) for flame-retardant clothing. This safety clothing is worn in areas where there is an explosion hazard. Where there is a risk of an explosion, there is also a risk of fire. This safety clothing must not be used in oxygen-enriched environments, and does not protect against mains voltage. Safety clothing that complies with the EN 1149-5 standard is often used by companies that have to comply with the ATEX directive.
